The Business Plan

This is my first post for my new business; the Business Trigger (Ltd). I thought that I would start by recounting a recent discussion with an old colleague. He is a very good brand developer and mentioned that in a recent workshop he hosted for start-up businesses; he was interested in that the “had spent enormous energy on their business plans but very little on their understandings of their positioning and how to present themselves and their products”.

I believe this illustrates the failings of many business plans – they do not portray to the reader the work that the author(s) have put into the plan. This is generally due to the plan’s failure to link each facet of the business with another.

What do I mean by this?

All business owners believe in their products/services but often concentrate the focus of their plan on the benefits of their product rather than the processes which are needed to support that product in the market.

I have often sat down with clients whilst reviewing their business plans and it has become apparent that they are aware of the strategies needed across their business arena but have not linked one strategy with another in the written business plan. The business plan is a jigsaw puzzle with interlocking and overlapping pieces; the authors of the best business plans have a firm understanding of these relationships.

I would be interested in hearing all of your thoughts so please post them!
